Are you not tired of wearing this religious mode every Sunday? Are you not tired of hearing sermons from the pulpit of getting involve always with activities of the church? Who else has been tired of all these duties?
The cry of the Samaritan woman for the Lord Jesus to give her the living water to drink is an epitome of the growing disenchantment of many over these burdensome and repetitive religious performance done every Sunday. The idea of appeasing God through endless effort inside the cradle of religion is totally antithetical to what the Lord Jesus has offered to all. The Lord Jesus has offered Himself, His Spirit as the final way of pleasing God. Christ's act of obedience to the Father's will had paved the way for all believers to please God spontaneously. Pleasing God in the new covenant setting is no longer contingent to what we perform inside our modern temples, mistakenly labelled by many as the church.
For the last two millennia, mankind's engagement with religion as their means of appeasing what they perpetually perceived as stern and hard-to-please Father must be examined. It is this idea of man's inability to please God that had caused many to be restless in their works inside religion. They always considered Sunday activities as a performance to please God.
In the new covenant relationship that is found in Christ, there is nothing else that pleases God, it was the complete obedience of Jesus to His Father's will. At the cross of Calvary, there is nothing that can surpass or even substitute the sacrifice that God Himself had done. He offered the life of His only Son for the redemption of mankind.
Pleasing God today is no longer confined in the religious activities done during Sunday. Pleasing God is no longer exclusively identified with what people considered as "spiritual zone" while outside of that zone they missed to note that God is equally concern over things labelled as materials.
The reason many of those who defined pleasing God based on old testament setting are always restless and unhappy with their earthly life is the belief that life is dwelling in a bifurcated, dualistic world of spiritual and material divides. Everytime they are given responsibilities on "non-spiritual" matters, they cannot function well because they hesitate to give their best. They are fully convinced that their "non-spiritual" endeavors cannot please God. They always hear the sermons of ministers that going to church, volunteering for activities inside the church are the only legitimate and God-accepted kind of tasks. Outside of these church-related works are considered worldly activities that God does not care.
